Abstract: With the increasing importance of information systems (IS) in all types of organizations, Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are taking more and more managerial responsibilities. A successful CIO should be effective not only on technology implementation but also on organization management. Through a largescale survey of Chinese CIOs, this paper investigates the factors that influence the relative importance of the managerial roles of Chinese CIOs. Our results reveal that the relative importance of these roles is influenced by IS management maturity, IS management centralization, and IS management effectiveness.
