Analysis of the Situation and Influence Factors of China-ASEAN Scientific Research Cooperation

Abstract: ASEAN has become the priority development direction of China’s“Belt and Road”initiative. Strengthening China-ASEAN scientific research cooperation will help improve the scientific research strength and economic level of each country. It also helps to promote cultural exchanges between the two sides and serve the development strategies of countries. Therefore,analysis of the situation and influencing factors of China-ASEAN scientific research cooperation will contribute to the formulation of relevant science and technology policies. This paper uses the data collection from Web of Science, World Bank, International Telecommunication Union etc. The data of China and ASEAN countries from 2000 to 2017 are selected as samples. Scientometrics, social network analysis, gravity model and other methods are used. The overall situation and influencing factors of scientific research cooperation between China and ASEAN countries in the past 18 years have been analyzed. Results show that: (1) China-ASEAN scientific research cooperation shows a rapid growth trend. (2) The intensity of cooperation between the two sides has gradually increased, and the output of ESI high cited papers has increased year by year. (3) China is an important node for ASEAN countries to carry out foreign scientific research cooperation. (4) China-ASEAN research cooperation field is dominated by science and engineering, with less humanities and social sciences. (5) Cooperative institutions are mostly high-level research institutes and universities. (6) From the perspective of influencing factors, the higher the overall level of economic, scientific research, communication and foreign exchanges, the greater the possibility of cooperation. (7) China-ASEAN cooperation is also affected by national distance, social distance and technological similarity. Finally, the paper puts forward suggestions for strengthening scientific research cooperation.
